As you will all know we have an infestation of Gigas oysters on the sandbank at the end of the jetty, these make it a very dangerous area to walk on and we have had several bad injuries in recent weeks.

To try to allieviate this situation before the busy summer weeks there will be a work party on Saturday 17th July at 10.30. Low tide is about 11.00 so we should be able to access the sandbank and make an effort to clear some of the oysters from the launching area.

English Nature has granted authority to the club to clear the gigas oysters but only using manual methods at this time, so you will need a good pair of garden wellies to protect your feet, garden gloves or similar for your hands and a garden fork maybe useful!

This will only be effective if we can get a good number of volunteers to attack the oysters, it affects all of us so please make a big effort to come down and help.

thanks

Dave Gibbons

Just a thought guys...a possible earner for the club??
The sale of oysters during the breeding season is prohibited by law, hence the expression, "Oysters should only be eaten when there's an 'R' in the month."
However as the gigas don’t theoretically spawn here, and the laws forbidding the sale of oysters during the summer months were passed before they were introduced, they can be sold throughout the year!

Price List

Gigas (rocks): Available all year round
12 - £ 12.00

24 - £ 20.00

50 - £ 35.00

Prices include delivery.

As I said, just a thought, but if there are that many of them down there...

failing which, I remember a balmy summer evening many years ago with a group of us sitting outside the Cherry Tree one Saturday evening after racing, with a bucket of rock oysters, a bottle of Gin, a slab of Ginger Bread and a bottle of Tabasco Sauce (and several pints of Abbott!)...happy days!!!

PLEASE.....PLEASE.....PLEASE.....DO NOT think that you can sell these oysters...Let alone eat them....Oysters have to be put though a filtering process....which DOES NOT happen at the bottom of our ramp...They are probably poisonous!!!!!!!!

The work party has been cancelled until further notice, more detail will be posted here.

Hi Dave
We suggest you cancel your work party if you are not removing the oysters from the site, and await the outcome of our trial on Friday afternoon.
Regards Ian
