After seven years of service on the General Committee, three as Hon General Secretary and four as Commodore, the incomparable Alice Davies made her final Commodore's Presentation at the 2016 BSC AGM, held in the clubhouse on Monday 28 March. Alice's contribution as captain of the BSC ship has been immense, handling not only the typical duties of a Commodore, but also heading up one planned major refit and one most definitely unplanned post flood refit too.  In recognition of her dedicated service to the club, out going President David Gibbons presented Alice with a beautiful marine print. David Gibbons has served on the General Committee, as Commodore, President and Hon Treasurer and has been another stalwart of the club for many years, so Alice in turn presented David with a thank you gift to mark the conclusion of his term as President. David was reelected as Hon Treasurer so will continue in that role. The club truly is run voluntarily by the members for the members and we all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Alice and David for their contributions.  Whilst both will continue to support the club it is now time for a new generation to step up and get involved.  Firstly a huge thank you to everyone who has volunteered to stand for a flag officer or general committee role already - we have a very strong team with a great mix of experience and new blood. These people are the unsung heroes of our club and we can't thank them enough. The 2016 Brightlingsea Sailing Club AGM, held in the club house on Monday 28 March, resulted in the election of the following officers (click here for photos and contact details).  Full minutes of the AGM will be available in due course. President Retiring Commodore Alice Davies was invited by outgoing President David Gibbons to become President with immediate effect and graciously accepted his invitation. Accounts Examiners Alan Hicks and Barry Newman were once again elected to continue as the club's Accounts Examiners.
Don't forget that the 2016 BSC AGM takes place at 11am on Easter Monday, 28 March. With new officers to elect, the chance to review the club's activities and performance over the past year and look ahead to plans for 2016 and beyond, it's going to be an interesting meeting so please do attend.
If you have already purchased a copy of the 2016 BSC Course Card please note that there is a minor typo on the section covering the BOD courses.  The remaining stock copies of the card have been hand corrected so if you purchase one from Easter onwards it will be correct.  However, for those who purchased a card on the opening weekend of the season please note the following corrections. In the section on BOD Courses there are two course groups.  Currently the group listed at the top of the page is called Group F - BOD CYC, but this should read Group F - BOD Offshore.  The second group of BOD courses is called Group F - BOD, but this should read Group G - BOD Inshore. Please hand correct your card as necessary.  These changes have been noted on the master document so will be rectified in the next print run.
With the new season now upon us I would like to let you know of some changes to this year’s sailing. For fleet racing this year we are going to try some different groupings. Lasers, BODs and Fireballs will keep their own starts as long as there are at least 4 per race start, and an average of over 5 per series is maintained. For handicap fleets we are proposing an Asymmetric fleet, Fast Handicap and Slow Handicap. Cats and Fast Asymmetric boats are being put together. Slower asymmetric can choose to go in fast, slow handicap or asymmetric as we appreciate Topaz may not want to do the larger asymmetric courses, but for a series they have to stay in their chosen fleet! With a lot of help from Alan Hicks, Malcolm Goodwin and Jeremy Newman we have redone the course card. The courses all have been made to fit lengths and to ensure that no courses clash to have fleets going around the same mark in different directions.  If you find problems let me know so we can refine them.  Within the restrictions of the river we have attempted to make the courses to the following:- A - Short                  Slow Handicap/ very light winds B - Medium             Laser/lighter days C - Longer               Fast Handicap/Fireball/ Average wind strengths D - Asymmetric      Long for Fast Asymmetrics E - Upriver              For Transition and very windy days F - BOD Offshore   BODs normal racing G - BOD Inshore    BODs for very windy or very light days Remember to get a new course card!! To solve the problems of BODs not having time to sign on and get on the water in time with Park and Ride, they now have the option of telling a safety boat crew to sign them on – this must be done before the start.  Therefore, one safety boat will have to remain in the creek near the turning mark for them to be able to do this – after the start the safety boat will radio the race box to inform them of the BODs signing on.  The Race box will then add them to the signing on sheet. The BODs MUST however sign off at the signing off sheet on the board at the Starting Hut.  In the event the safety boat is called away and cannot take entries, then the Race officer is asked to use their discretion and add starting BODs to the race. Also with the help of Dave Gibbons all the races have been uploaded to the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick scheme. The new PYs have ben published and these have been compared to the recommended Brightlingsea PYs from the RYA and the new Brightlingsea 2016 PYs constructed.  I am sure these changes will cause a lot of discussion, especially at the bar! Dave White drone photo The front dinghy park will formally reopen to accept boats into their allocated slots on Saturday 19 March, in time for the first race of the year on Sunday 20 March - the Ralph Sutton Trophy and Len Cook Tankard (cadets) starting at 11.00. Those who have had their boats in the rear boat park for winter storage, but have been allocated a slot in the front dinghy park for the season are asked to kindly ensure their boats are moved promptly so that those coming into the rear dinghy park for the season can get into their slots.
