The funeral for Geoff Payne has been arranged for Friday 30th June at 14:00 at Weeley Church. The family have suggested that people park in the back entrance to Hilltop Nursery and walk to Weeley church (5 mins). The nursery will be shut for the day so no access from the main road. There is limited parking at the church should it be required.
Following assessment by a member of the RYA’s Saillability team we are very pleased to announce that Brightlingsea Sailing Club has been awarded RYA Sailability Centre status. We already have a number of disabled members and our club is well equipped to support sailors with a range of disabilities so we look forward to developing this side of our activities. For further information about what the club can offer disabled sailors please contact Fiona Brown on
It is with the greatest sadness that we advise you that early today (Monday 12 June) the irrepressible, warm and wonderful Geoff Payne crossed his final finish line. Geoff was a long standing member of the club and an incredible supporter of the BOD fleet, famously owning Viking for a number of years. Our thoughts are with his wife Margaret, sons John, Andrew and Stephen and his family and friends. We will share details of the funeral when they are available.
Please note that there are three further corrections required to start times given in the Printed version of the BSC Calendar.  These changes are as follows: Saturday 8th July shown as 11:00 – start should be 14:00 Sunday 9th July shown as 11:00 – start should be 12:00 – the race is the three Creeks Crawl so this special time is set to give the boats plenty of water to get round the islands Sunday 23rd  July shown as 11:00 – start should be at 14:00 hrs All times on the online calendar are correct so these changes only apply to the printed version of the calendar.
Please note that there is an error on the printed calendar.  The race start times for this weekend (10 and 11 June) should both be 14.00 (not 11.00 as printed).  The online version of the calendar is correct. Huge apologies for this error.  Please spread the word to fellow members, friends and family to ensure they know about this change.
A great big thank you to the almost 60 teams that joined us for the 2017 GP14 Southern Area Championship and Fireball and Merlin Rocket Open Meetings over the weekend of 3 and 4 June.  It was fantastic to have so many visitors with us for the weekend and the weather gods definitely smiled on us by providing warm weather and great sailing breeze with a bit of something for everyone. The GP14s fielded 18 crews competing for the right to call themselves GP14 Southern Area Champion 2017.  It was a tight competition with Fergus Barntam and Andy Hunter of Snettisham SC taking victory by a four point margin over Peter Grey and Richard Peperdine of Staunton Harold SC with Andrew Clewer and Sarah Collingwood of Poole YC a further two points behind in third. The Merlin Rockets fielded the largest fleet with 19 teams from as far afield as Starcross and Lyme Regis taking part.  Chris Gould and Chris Gilsby from Midlands SC put in a great performance to win the regatta counting a 1, 1, 1, 2 scoreline with their only slight stumble coming in race four where they none the less finished sixth.  The battle for second place was extremely close but victory in the final race gave Tim Saxton and Caroline Croft from Grafham Water SC the second step on the podium, with William Warren and Mark Oakley from Shoreham SC third. Just a single point separated first and second place in the Fireball fleet with  Vince Horey and Robert Gardiner of King Georges SC claiming the narrow victory over Kevin Hope and Russell Thorne of Notts County SC.  Our own Pete and Tom Kyne did us proud claiming third place overall. We'd also like to say a huge thank you to our Race Officer Phil Rust and his team for laying on a great regatta, to Vice Commodore Martin Worth and the Sailing Committee for all their advance work in putting the event together and managing the backroom activities throughout the weekend, to Joint Vice Commodore's House Ian and Tina Hastings and their wonderful galley volunteers who did such a great job of keeping everyone fed and watered and to all our volunteer members who gave up their time to help make this event such a great success for both the competitors and the club. Full results can be found at and we very much hope to welcome all three fleets back to Brightlingsea Sailing Club again very soon.
We still have some un-filled slots in Dutyman we urgently help with as follows: Sunday 21st May  (11.00 start): OOD  Monday 29th May (14.00 start) Patrol 1 Crew Patrol 2 Helm Patrol 2 Crew 14:00  Please also note that this weekend’s May Mugs on 20 and 21 May will start at 11am. A Reminder - PLEASE remember to Sign On but most importantly also Sign Off There have been some instances recently were people have not signed off and the OOD has had to check the dinghy park, changing rooms and even contact friends/family to make sure the sailor is safely ashore.  This is all about keeping everyone safe and it just might save your life one day so please remember to Sign ON and OF.
Having reviewed the forecast for this evening it has unfortunately been necessary to cancel Development Sailing as we are expecting thunder storms and possible strong winds during the period we would be afloat. Our next Development Session is on Wednesday 31 May, and don't forget we also have the first Family Fun Friday and Women On Water session coming up this Friday 19 May when we hope conditions will be better.
