We are delighted to confirm that the Transition Squad will once again be operating for the 2017 season and that main registration for this year’s sessions will take place this coming Saturday 22 April at 10am.  The sessions typically take place on a Saturday morning from 10am for around two hours, and are designed to help cadets who have already learnt the sailing basics, but now want to gain experience and develop their racing skills. A typical Transition Squad session starts ashore in the Training/Cadet Room (ground floor at the rear of the club beyond the bar) where everyone is briefed on the plans and objectives for the day.  Those that need it can be given assistance to rig their boats and get afloat.  And then it’s all out onto the water to work on exercises and race practise in the creek. Finally its back ashore for a debrief to talk about what’s been achieved.  Our amazing Cadet Captain Graham Eeles and his team start with the basics of boat handling, manoeuvres, trimming, tactics, tide, etc, and then encouraging each individual to progress at their own pace. As they gain confidence, Transition Squad members are encouraged to take part in club races (we have special cadet courses which keep them closer to the club) and we hope that all those in the Squad will also take part in BSC’s Youth Regatta from 2-4 August, and Learning & Skills Solutions Pyefleet Week from 5-12 August. As well as seeking out participants for the Transition Squad sessions we are also always on the lookout for volunteers who would be willing to help out.  From making sure the boats are rigged and helping with launching and recovery, to manning a rescue boat or being an extra pair of hands in the galley when they all come ashore starving hungry, we have plenty of jobs to do so please shout if you can spare a few hours. All cadets taking part in the Transition Squad sessions must bring a parent or guardian with them to initial registration to complete necessary paperwork.  If you aren’t able to attend this Saturday, but do want your children to take part please email Graham on to advise him of your interest and let him know when you anticipate being able to join the sessions. The dates for this year’s Transition Squad sessions are: Saturday 22 April Saturday 13 May Sunday 28 May – Regatta Weekend Special Demo Sail Saturday 10 June Saturday 24 June Saturday 8 July Saturday 22 July Wednesday 2 to Friday 4 August – BSC Youth Regatta Saturday 2 September Saturday 23 September Saturday 21 October Please let us know if the cadet(s) in your life would like to get involved. There was a great turnout for the 2017 Annual General Meeting of Brightlingsea Sailing Club, held on the morning of Monday 17 April.  A report of the meeting will follow in due course, however we are delighted to immediately confirm that the AGM elected our new Commodore Fiona Brown (left) and Joint Vice Commodores House & Entertainment Ian and Tina Hastings, while Vice Commodore Sailing Martin Worth was elected for a second year. David Gibbons was once again elected as Treasurer and Rose Winship continues as General Secretary.  Fiona's first formal item of business upon being elected was to invite Alice Davies to continue as President of the Club, an invitation which Alice gracefully accepted. Click here to check out the names of the other General Committee members elected, which include newcomers Mark Wilby as Social Secretary and Peter Stonebridge as Member with responsibility for Health & Safety and Regulatory Matters, as well as a host of very familiar faces.
As this year's Thursday Night Series starts a week later than usual (11 May), by popular demand we have added an extra one off Champagne Pursuit Race on Thursday 4 May. The format will be exactly the same as the normal Thursday night pursuits with the first start at 19.00 - high tide is 19.00 too so perfect timing. The results won't count towards the Thursday series but the lucky winner will receive a bottle of champagne at the post race prize giving.
The club's 2017 Annual General Meeting is coming up this Easter Monday and all members are reminded to attend.  You will have received the main papers for the meeting with your renewal reminder email back at the beginning of the year so please refer to that pack for full details. Legendary sailor and sailmaker Mike McNamara has won more National, Continental and World Championships than most of us have had hot dinners. His talks on trimming and getting your boat to go fast are both hugely informative and highly entertaining, and we are delighted to announce that Mike will join us at Brightlingsea Sailing Club to Talk Trimming on Friday 12 May 2017 from 7pm. This will be a very practical, hands on session so do please join us and be ready to get involved and learn from the master. Part of the talk is planned to take place in front of the club so bring a jacket as it can get chilly. The talk will cost £3.00 per head and we are also offering a club supper at a cost of £7.00 per head (payable in advance). Please book your tickets online here.
