We all know only too well that Brightlingsea Sailing Club is located in one of the most idyllic spots on the East Coast and that there are few things in life more enjoyable than spending time messing around on our beach and in the Creek with friends and family. We're also aware that while we have lots of racing and formal training opportunities, to date we haven't focused on supervised sailing purely for fun and fitness.  Well in 2017 that is all going to change with the introduction of Friday Night Family Fun and Women On Water (WOW) Sessions. These sessions will be run from May through until July and will be timed to coincide with evening high water times to make them perfect for fun at the beach.  There will be rescue boat support with informal coaching advice for those who would like it. The club boats will be available for those who don't have their own boats, and members of all ages and abilities are welcome to simply come and  join in the fun. As part of the National This Girl Can campaign we will be including special opportunities to get the girls afloat. Whether you want to race or simply enjoy pottering around our beautiful creeks and rivers for fun, sailing is a great way to get fit and enjoy time in the fresh air. We will have female coaches on hand to help get you afloat and introduce you to the sport, and if you discover you love it as much as we do there are plenty of ways we can get you more involved. The bar will be open and the galley team will be coordinating various offerings (ideas under discussion include firing up the club BBQs so you can bring your own food to cook, a bulk order Fish and Chips night and a Curry night) so you can truly make it a great fun and relaxed evening among friends. The 2017 Friday Night Family Fun And Women On Water dates are: Friday 19th May Friday 2nd June Friday 16th June Friday 30th June Friday 14th July Friday 28th July The sessions will start at 18.00.  For more information please contact Craig Bond on

On Friday 10 March 2017 starting at 7.30pm International Judge David Chivers will run a fun, interactive session to take you through the key racing rules and bring you up to speed on the changes in the new Racing Rules of Sailing introduced on 1 January 2017. The session is both fun and informative and is a great way to brush up your rules knowledge or learn about the rules if you are relatively new to sailing. There's lots of audience participation and role playing which will help you to understand how the rules work in practise in our racing area. At the end of the seminar there will be a Q&A session if you have particular questions you would like answered. The bar will be open on arrival, there is a one pot club supper on offer mid evening between sessions, and of course drinks the bar afterwards for those who want to stay on and compare notes. Everyone participating is asked to bring with them either an copy of the new 2017-2020 Racing Rules of Sailing or the RYA's Handy Guide To The Racing Rules 2017-2020 - both of which can be obtained from the RYA's Online Shop. There are an absolute maximum of just 30 places for this session so please book early to avoid disappointment (if there is sufficient demand we will run a second session). There is no charge to take part in the session, but if you would like supper the cost will be £5.  This session must be booked in advance so please click here to register.
Want to find out more about how to use and get the best from the new computerised starting system in the Race Box?  Well here's your chance as Dave Charlton leads a fun informal introductory session on the new system and also shares some top tips on making your life as Race Officer or Assistant Race Officer easier. On Friday 3 March starting at 7.30pm Dave will take you through the new computer based starting system for class, handicap and pursuit racing before opening the session up to give everyone hands on experience with the system and the chance to ask questions and exchange ideas. The session will also touch on other elements of OOD duties such as selecting the correct course, radio communications with the patrol boats, results admin, etc. The aim of the evening is to leave participants confident to act as OOD or Assistant OOD in the race box. The bar will be open on arrival and it will be a fun informal atmosphere with a one pot club supper available mid evening between sessions and drinks at the bar afterwards for those who want to stay on. There is an absolute maximum of just 20 places for this session so please book early to avoid disappointment (if there is sufficient demand we will run a second session).
