The 2016 Brightlingsea Sailing Club Laying Up Supper and Prize Giving will take place on Saturday 29 October.  Further details will be published shortly but please mark your calendars for this date and join us for what is always a wonderful celebration of the year's activity.
The BSC Youth Regatta organised by the BSC Cadet Parents from July 27 to 29 proved to be a resounding success with 20 boats entered.  The aim of the week was to provide youngsters who are developing their racing skills the opportunity to enjoy a full regatta experience in preparation for Learning & Skills Solutions Pyefleet Week. Graham Eeles and Ian Hastings led the organising team which was entirely made up of volunteer members. It was a delighted to watch the children's confidence grow day by day and such was the success of the opening day that several children who had not had the confidence to enter initially asked to be included for the rest of the event. The races started at 3pm each day and were preceded by a briefing session led by Graham, to help the kids know what to expect of the weather and the race course. With a great support team of parents manning rescue boats, helping get the kids rigged and ready, assisting with the starting and results, it truly met the BSC ethos of being run by the members for the members and a huge vote of thanks goes to everyone who made the event possible. Ashore there was am informal social programme organised by the cadets themselves (with a bit of help from the parents!) with activities including a movie night and a post racing Beach BBQ. The racing was run as a single fleet with individual class results then being extracted. Six races were run over the three days from the club line using laid marks on a course the kept the fleet within sight of the club allowing friends and family to enjoy the spectacle too.  Overall it was the RS Feva of Rebecca Bines that claimed victory with Alex Lightly's Laser Radial second, Brooke Hastings' Tera Sport third, Brandon Hastings' Laser Radial fourth and Tom King's Laser Radial fifth. Whilst we may all be focused on Learning & Skills Solutions Pyefleet Week, some of our BSC sailors have been out taking on the world and winning! James King and Jack Butters have just claimed victory at the 2016 Nacra 15 Championship on Lake Como in Italy.  It was a tricky week's sailing and the competition was incredibly close so huge congratulations to James and Jack. Meanwhile over in Santander Matt Taylor and Will Caron and Joshua Davies and Blake Tudor have put in superb performances at the RS Feva World Championship where they finished 9th and 10th respectively - great results from these two teams who are relatively new to the international sailing scene.
Don't forget that you can keep up with all the latest news and happenings from Learning & Skills Solutions Pyefleet Week at Please note that the online entry system will close at 6pm tonight to allow us to prepare the paperwork for registration tomorrow so if you wish to get ahead of the game and fill in your paperwork in advance please do so today.
Members are reminded that for safety the exclusion zone around the new wreck off No 13 buoy (marked by blue and yellow wreck markers) is also formally an exclusion zone for all BSC races.  Any boat that sails inside the exclusion zone/wreck buoys will be disqualified from racing. We have also been advised by the Harbour that the wreck is breaking up and large items of floating and semi submerged debris (big planks of wood, etc) may be in the water both near the wreck and across the whole of our race area.  The Harbour is working to collect debris regularly but please be extremely vigilant when sailing to ensure you do not collide with anything. Also if you do see large debris in the water please inform the Harbour Office (Channel 68 if you have a VHF available, Tel 01206 302200 or pop into the office) so that they can recover it as soon as possible. We understand that plans are being made to lift the wreck in the near future and will keep you informed when a date for this operation is given.
The Pyefleet Week NOR/Sailing Instructions allow for additional classes to be added if fleets can achieve an entry of 5 or more boats.  We are delighted to announce that the RS700 fleet has declared it will be entering 8 boats for this year's Pyefleet Week and so they have been given their own start for the week and will be racing using the Asymmetric group Pyefleet Week courses.  The revised fleet split now looks like this: Group A Fast Handicap Fireball Laser Wivenhoe One Design RS700 Cadet Handicap (club line) Group B Asymmetric Handicap BOD Slow Handicap Parent and Child Possible additional class if required
