Covid-19 Statement - 4 November 2020 - All Club Activities Cancelled Until 2 December

Published 09:05 on 5 Nov 2020

In response to the England-wide lockdown which commences at 00.01 on Thursday 5 November, Brightlingsea Harbour Commission has confirmed that whilst the lockdown is in effect the harbour will be closed for all leisure use. Only commercial operators and emergency access will be permitted and the Harbour will be running on a reduced staff.

The harbour's closure means that sadly we will not be able to hold races 3, 4, 5 or 6 of the Winter Series or the planned RS Tera and 29er Training Weekends also scheduled during November and that members will not be permitted to launch or recover from the ramp for independent sailing/water sports until at least 2 December.

At this time whether it will be possible for us to run any races during December is uncertain and will depend on government policy, RYA guidance, access to the Harbour and of course our ability to get sufficient volunteers to provide the necessary patrol boat, race office and duty officer cover. Your committee will be watching the relevant updates closely and will keep you fully informed at the earliest opportunity if we are able to run any further racing this year.

We would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help in the race office, on the patrol boats or as a duty officer during November, but confirm that you can definitely stand down.

For those due to do a duty during December, if you are willing/able to still do that duty please continue to hold those dates available at the current time and we will update you as soon as we are able.

Clearly some members may now wish to remove their boats from the dinghy park or book in for winter storage in the back dinghy park, which must be reserved via Kathy Ashworth on subssecretary@sailbrightlingsea.com. If your usual space is in the back dinghy park and you have decided to take your boat home we would appreciate it if you could remove it sooner rather than later to aid Kathy in allocating winter storage spaces as needed.

Those leaving their boats in the boat park are reminded to double-check their cover and tie-down are fully secured asap as more gales are expected and the committee members who usually patrol the boat park regularly will not be able to get there as often during lockdown.

Tracey King has confirmed that she has now closed the Beachbox Cafe, which has provided a wonderful social focal point for us all during this most extraordinary season. Not only has Tracey kept us fed and watered with delicious beverages and snacks, but she has also donated a generous percentage of her profits to the club, a vital financial contribution in a year where our unavoidable overheads will inevitably exceed our income. I know you will all want to join me in saying a huge heart felt thank you to Tracey for the terrific role she has played in helping to make life at the club seem just a little bit more normal this year.

We will continue to send out BSC Buzz on a regular basis to keep you updated and if anyone has good ideas for content that will keep us all entertained during lockdown please contact Editor Fiona Brown on president@sailbrightlingsea.com.

Sadly we will not see much of each other for the next few weeks, but we are a strong community of friends so please stay safe, look after each other and if anyone finds themselves needing help or support at any time please don't hesitate to reach out.

Stay safe everyone.
