Here is Vice Commodore of Sailing Simon Redfearn's January Update.
A belated Happy New year to everyone.
A few dates for your diary.
We are running 3 talks at the club this Spring for your education and entertainment. The first is a talk by Dave Charlton on Race management. To be held at the club on Friday 15th March at 7.00pm. This will be aimed at the management on the water of Open Meetings but will also be of interest to anyone who races.
On Sunday 17th March at 1.00pm Dave Gibbons will be holding a talk/tuition session on how to run a Club race from the start box. As a club we are always short of Race Officers so we are keen to persuade more people to take this role on. Please come along to this informal session to see how it works.
On Saturday 23rd March at 7.00pm Alec Mumford will be holding a Safety Boat and Powerboat workshop. This will include the following areas of interest.
Mark Laying
PB handling (Elements)
PB handling (Rough weather)
Assisting in rescuing
Rescuing with no crew assistance
Towing Aft
Towing alongside
Towing Performance boats
Entrapment
Search Patterns (Box and Sector).
Alec Mumford is an experienced multi discipline RYA Instructor with a passion for CPD (Continual Professional Development). Alec has delivered the RYA Powerboat and Sailing scheme for many years with an ongoing focus on instructor CPD and sharing his knowledge. Over the last few years Alec has dedicating his own time for CPD being invited to practical assessment's by Rachel Andrew (RYA Chief Instructor Motor Cruising and Power) and Paul Glatzel (Author of the RYA's Advanced Powerboat Handbook).
Throughout the workshop he will be sharing experiences from his time on the water with an open discussion. The workshop will focus on powerboat skills, safety boat coordination, rescuing techniques and advanced powerboat manoeuvres. If you are a pleasure boater, safety coordinator, club safety boat volunteer or powerboat instructor the workshop will benefit you in all areas.
If there is anything you feel would benefit your club to be included in this workshop, please contact me (Simon Redfearn) and I will pass this on to Alec who will try and accommodate this.
As you will know lots of people at the club are putting a lot of time and expertise into training and developing our Cadets and other novice sailors. We would like to encourage more people to be involved with this. In the Spring we are hoping to host an RYA Race Coach Level 2 training weekend. This is open to any good club sailor and the cost of training will be covered by the club. Please contact me if you are interested.
Finally, have you put your duties down for the 2019 season The Duty Roster is now online on the website so please login and get your duties booked. As a reminder, we ask all our members to locate themselves in the following groups and ask them to do the following duties.
Racing members to do 4 duties on the water or in the race office inclusive of Opens.
Racing Cadets (16-18) to do 2 duties on the water or in the race office.
Social members to do 2 duties on the water or in the galley.
Members who have a boat in the park to do 2 duties on the water or in the galley.
Affiliate Members to do 2 duties on the water or in the galley.
Cruising members to do 2 duties on the water or in the galley.
Members who are physically challenged and life members are not obliged to do a duty but may do so.
Members who do not use the club are not obliged to do a duty but may do so.
You have until the end of February to enter your duties before the Dutyman allocates your duties for you.
We also have 3 work party days organised for Saturday 9th March, Sunday 17th March and Saturday 24th March, all at 10.30am. We need as many helping hands as possible and we have loads of jobs that need to be done before the start of the season.
