It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of long standing BSC member Tony Smith, who died on 12 September following a period of illness. Tony and his wife Betty joined the club in the very early 1970s and Tony soon became well known as a Hornet crew, a GP14 helm and later a Wayfarer helm.

As well as enjoying his own sailing Tony not only taught his sons Mark and Jon and his grandsons to sail, but was also instrumental in supporting organised sail training at the club with Brian Curry – a legacy which continues to this day through our Tuesday Cadet Nights. He continued to support cadet development throughout his life and when his own sailing days were over he donated his beloved Piglet to the club for use by the sailing school and cadets. Piglet is still regularly out on the water with our courses and on Tuesday nights, introducing the next generations to the joys of sailing. Our photo shows Tony teaching one of his grandsons to helm his Wayfarer Piglet.

Alongside his wonderful support of BSC, Tony was also a founder member of Ardleigh SC, where he kept a beautiful 11+ dinghy.

Although not able to sail himself in recent years, Tony and Betty were often to be found sitting on the start line bench of a weekend or a Tuesday evening, keeping a watchful eye on the club's activities and chatting with friends. Tony will be much missed by us all at the club and we shall be forever grateful for his most generous support.

The funeral will take place at St Mary's Church, Langham on Wednesday 9th October 2019 at 11.30am and the family have asked us to let you know that anyone who knew Tony would be very welcome to join them. Family flowers only, donations if desired to Prostate Cancer UK may be made online via www.hunnaball.co.uk
