Sailing Update - April 2019

Published 16:24 on 11 Apr 2019

You may want to read our Racing Overview for 2018 (see link at the bottom of this article). Thanks to Dave Charlton for putting this together. It is good to see that Race Turn-out is consistent with last year and that we average around 20 boats per race. Please have a look at the analysis for more information. If we add the Cadets into this analysis we can say that turn out is on the increase.

This is good to see but we all must make every effort to get on the water this year and increase participation at all levels. We aim to offer sailing and racing opportunities for everyone at any level of ability.

We have added several new events for this year.

We have seven Mirror class races throughout the year. In addition to the Mirror start volunteers will be running a sailing and training session before the race. This is an opportunity to get some practise and training in with safety cover on the water. The Mirror Class has a long history at our club and many of our champions have raced in the Class. It will be great to see a good racing fleet on the water again. If you have a Mirror please make every effort to join in the race whatever your ability. The latest Mirror News from the fleet is available on the website

If you are over 18 and new to sailing and want to improve. We have `Learn to Sail` sessions on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. We will have safety boats on the water and advice from experienced sailors will be available. In addition we are running a new race on four of these evenings. Called `The Rookie Race` it is aimed at newcomers and will be a relaxed introduction to the mysteries of racing. A fun prize to the winner of a short race based in the creek. If this event proves to be popular we can extend the races beyond the 4 in the calendar.

For the more experienced racers we have added `The River Start Series` to the calendar. This will run on low tide weekends throughout the summer. A series that will give you Windward starts in open water with simpler courses and hopefully fairer more competitive races. I hope you all enjoy this change to the format.

The Events Calendar is online and the new printed calendar will be available at the club from this weekend.

We have also printed new course cards that are available behind the bar for £1. These are the same courses as the old card but we have a few minor updates to names on them.

We also have the new Cadet Course Card available behind the bar.
